Hello blog readers! As an admissions officer, I often get asked to share general advice about the recruiting process. I know how stressful this whole situation can be, and I try to be as honest and constructive as I would be if advising a close friend. In that helpful spirit, I wanted to share a friendly reminder with those of you who are attending school visits or other business school recruiting events, like receptions or fairs. First of all, please know that we are very happy that visit season is underway, and it is always exciting to welcome people to campus. We hope that you will feel comfortable here, and that you will be as relaxed and at ease as possible. (Even our interviews, while covering all relevant ground, are deliberately conversational in tone). Ok, all of that being said …. please, please remember that you want to put your best foot forward, and that you are in a public setting. You just never know if the people at the next table (metaphorically speaking) are admissions officers or students who may be conducting your interview later in the day – or even class hosts or tour guides. You really don’t want to undermine the professional, mature impression that you are striving so hard to create by forgetting where you are. I don’t want you to feel paranoid, or like we are judgmental … that is really not the case. However, if you wouldn’t tell your interviewer about being hungover or disinterested in the school, etc …. then it behooves you not to have that conversation in a communal setting. Thanks for reading, and as always – I am happy to answer questions on any topic.
