Why so few updates?

My apologies on the blogging hiatus of late. My classmates and I have not been sailing in Colombia nor trekking in Kenya: recruitment has been by far and away the biggest drain on people’s time. At the extreme end, some people have endured seven or eight interviews in one day. If getting into a top business school is a big deal (and I’m sure looms large for many of you reading this) getting out the other side in the right place seems even more important. The storm is in full swing. Suits are ubiquitous. Faces are cleanly shaven. Stress is palpable. Killington is quiet.

Amidst the chaos, I feel like an imposter. Thanks to a generous serving from Lady Luck, I wrapped up my internship last term. While definitely relieved not to have the worries others do, there’s something to be said for being on a journey in tandem with one’s peers. In the end, it seems to work out pretty well for most. Even as some good opportunities pass, the right one seems to come along. Those who haven’t yet caught that marlin won’t have to wait long, I’m sure. One of my close friends here got his dream internship at a West Coast tech firm yesterday: drinking Scotch with him to celebrate last night was the highlight of an eventful term thus far.

Time seems to be a precious commodity for me these days, too; internship recruiting or not. A few classmates and I have been organizing a Burns Supper for February 5th. It promises to be a great night and I’ll follow up with another blog about it shortly after the event. Classes have been challenging, with case write ups and hefty reading packs: the material in Global Economics for Managers and Competitive and Corporate Strategy is so engaging it would be easy to spend weeks delving deeper.

Without question, the biggest demand on my time has come from an Independent Study Project I’m doing. While first year is taken up primarily by core courses, there is an opportunity to exempt some. I passed the exemption exam for Corporate Finance, and am engrossed in a project looking for UK acquisition targets for a consumer focused growth equity fund. I got home last night at 11pm and couldn’t help myself but open my laptop and press ahead with research for it: it’s a like a great book I just can’t put down.

The next couple of weeks will be eventful. Many of my classmates will tie down marvellous internships. I will travel with the Tuck soccer team to Austin, TX, to play in a tournament there. I have projects due in CCS and Entrepreneurship, and we’re kicking off my First Year Project this afternoon. Somewhere in between all of this, I’ll update the blog to let you all know how it’s going. In the meantime, good luck to everyone waiting to hear whether you’ll be on this crazy train next year!
