Why I Love Tuck Pt III: The Outdoors

One of the best things about Tuck is its access to the outdoors (and its alumni network too). Located in the Upper Valley region of New Hampshire, it is surrounded by beautiful scenery. Take for example the drive up I-91 to get to Hanover. There are, quite honestly, ridiculous views of the hills and rivers that cut through the town (not to mention that we’re in peak foliage season).

Now, most applicants know they will be in a major city following their glorious time at Tuck, so this experience is really a once in a lifetime chance to enjoy the outdoors. I would have never thought I would appreciate the outdoors so much, but you realize that the simpler things in life are extremely beautiful and really give you a piece of mind.

I’m sure a lot of readers have heard about the Outward Bound sailing trip (in which I participated), and there is a quote from a book from the trip that sums up how I feel about living in the midst of mother nature.

“I have about reached the conclusion that, while large industry is important, fresh air and clean water are more important, and the day may well come when we have to lay that kind of hand on the table to see who is bluffing.” – Barry Goldwater

There are a number of things to do here (and it doesn’t include Long Trail or IPA) which includes hikes, camping, canoeing, skiing, snowboarding, and a host of other outdoor activities. They undoubtedly give me a piece of mind, and I’m sure a lot of my T’12 classmates would say the same. The amount that you learn about yourself and the fact that you can actually think with a clear head is something I treasure from my time here thus far at Tuck!
