Dear Blog Readers,
Spring has finally sprung in Hanover, NH and with it have come a number of changes to life as a first year student at Tuck. For starters, warm weather has driven a number of Tuckies to trade their skis, snowboards, snowshoes, and other winter sport equipment for tennis racquets, golf clubs, and warm weather sporting gear. No gear? No problem. All you need is a pair sneakers to get out and take a walk or hike on the Appalachian Trail, which passes right through town.
Like the change in season, Spring is filled with transition at Tuck: First year students begin to take over leadership roles for all the clubs and committees on campus; Second years enjoy their last few months on campus before departing again for the working world; and the entire Tuck community prepares to welcome the Class of 2012 for Admitted Students Weekend.
Also, spring term is the first time during the first year curriculum that students have the opportunity to take electives. There are still three core requirements in spring term (Management Communications, Operations Management, and First Year Project, or FYP), however students also have the choice of taking full or half term electives. While the electives provide students an opportunity to explore academic topics of interest, FYP challenges students to integrate everything they’ve learned so far at Tuck into a comprehensive nine week project.
Unlike Fall and Winter term study groups which are assigned, students select their own FYP teams and projects. The projects are generally broken up into two categories: consulting and entrepreneurship. In a consulting project, teams are asked to find a client, such as a local business, that has an existing issue and would benefit from a team of Tuckies dedicating themselves to finding a solution. In an entrepreneurship projects, students with dreams or ambitions of starting their own business have the opportunity to write a business plan and explore the feasibility of their idea. I’m fortunate to be part of an incredible team on an entrepreneurship project that is looking to launch a Asian inspired fast-casual restaurant. Other entrepreneurship projects include iPhone applications and hair products, examples of consulting project clients include two of Hanover’s favorite establishments – the Hanover Inn and Murphy’s On the Green.
So, who’s down with FYP? Every last Tuckie! (If you don’t get that reference, you are either too old, too young, or lived in cave during the early 1990s)
EBSO – I just realized that I forgot to include and EBSO in my last blog, so this time I’m giving a shout out to my two friends Abhi and Anita, collectively also known as Abhi-ta. While some things change with the seasons and terms at Tuck, one thing stays the same, and that’s the spirit of the Tuck community. I recently injured my knee during soccer practice, rendering me dependent on crutches. Without hesitation Abhi and Anita took care of me by helping me around town so I wouldn’t miss a beat. Abhi-ta, you two are the best, and I can’t wait to go your wedding in India this fall!
