What to do when it’s so cold?

Tromping around in the snow with our dog.

I hope you’re all staying safe, warm, and that you take care on the streets out there during this wild storm (impacting at least 30 states in the US). As my eyes continue to widen at the thoughts of below zero temperatures and inches upon feet of snow (again), I realize how lucky I am to be experiencing such different weather. I mean, it’s just plain gorgeous around here.

The slopes are just a quick drive away.
Many Tuckies and their partners have taken advantage of our highly discounted season passes to a top-notch ski resort. I am constantly noticing status updates of Tuckies breaking away after morning classes and it seems easy to hitch a ride in many a vehicle heading that direction over the weekends. Even our Tiny Tuckies (children) are taking ski lessons and are taking on the bunny slopes like pros!

For those not inclined to ski, the number of winter activities is still seemingly endless. A friend told me that they feel like they’ve spent more time outdoors this winter than during the warmer months! Although I personally do not relate to his claim, I have to say it’s been easier than anticipated to embrace our new lifestyle. We got sturdy snowboots late fall, I invested in a sleeping-bag-style coat, and we give ourselves plenty of time to get anywhere we need to be.

The partner club events have been going strong; consistenly giving us plenty to do, even during the colder months. I am determined to finish our Book Club assignment this month (….halfway? i’m determined to get halfway) and many folks were taught how to make risotto in January. The Tuck Women in Business Club hosted an event with King Arthur Flour to give folks a break from books, life, and recruiting. The on-campus clubs are open to partners and plenty of us participated in this baking event.

My favorite winter activity and event so far was the Tuck Sledding last Saturday. My sides still ache a little from laughing so hard as I couldn’t resist another and another ride down the hill on plastic deathtraps (some people call them “sleds”). Tons of Tuckies came out to enjoy and the bright sun and soft snowflakes were perfect accompaniments to the hilarious afternoon; the hot coffee and donuts didn’t hurt either.

Ice skating on a real pond!

As newscasters report winter fatigue and snow boredom (snoredom?), I can’t help but do a mini jump for joy that we have a couple more months of this weather. Afterall, there are only so many weekends to fit in snowshoeing, tabogganing, skiing, ice fishing, skating, and cocoa drinking!

I’m sure we’ll all go nuts come springtime, but for now, I’m loving the snow.
