A community can be measured by the amount of effort its members put in to helping each other out when the chips are down, or to making life a little bit sweeter for its other members. Tuckies have consistently fulfilled the former by their helpfulness and consideration following my knee injury in February. Yesterday, they fulfilled the latter once again. During the T’11 class photo in the Hanover spring sunshine, my class put together a song and flash dance routine as a big send-off, followed by champagne and a cook-out. Small traditions such as this are sweet moments in the Tuck experience and a good measure of the incredible community at the school.
Touching on another point in Amy’s note below – the volume and quality of speakers on campus this week has been highly conducive to a serious dose of FOMO. Last night, I had to pick between listening to two speakers whose ideas for commercial businesses that have a positive social impact are inspirational: I ended up choosing Dan Richards (T’03), founder and CEO of Global Rescue, over Vijay Govindarajan (Tuck Professor), pioneer of the $300 house concept, which yesterday was underwritten by Ingersoll Rand. Dan was a remarkable individual with a similar background to me and it was very cool to hear about his entrepreneurial experience.
As an aside, I went for dinner after Dan’s talk with my study group from fall term. One of them is going work in corporate finance at Apple for the summer and told us that her welcome pack from Apple included a mountain bike for her to keep! It turns out Apple’s attention to detail for unexpected delights goes beyond their consumer products – what a splendid touch.
The next week is going to be extremely busy but very enjoyable: listening to the President of the World Bank at lunch today, finishing our First Year Project, going to the first annual comedy musical created by Tuck students, hosting my first event as co-chair of the Private Equity club, celebrating married life one year in, completing and presenting our final presentation for elective Strategy in Turbulent Environments, participating in a bachelor party for one of my classmates, coaching Tuck Rugby in a sevens match against Dartmouth’s undergraduate development team, attending the spring formal at the Hop Center, taking my Operations Management final exam, and hosting the end of season dinner and awards ceremony for Tuck Rugby Club – all in the wonderful, floral Hanover sunshine. Terrific.
