It’s an unfortunate, but true fact: Most top business schools do not provide application feedback to waitlisted applicants. If you find yourself waitlisted to your dream school, feedback-less, how will you know what to do next?
If your target school won’t let you know why you weren’t given the full golden ticket to acceptance, then you’re going to have to do your own application assessment:
1. Follow the school’s instructions. If you’re told not to contact the school, then do not contact the school. If you’re instructed to submit updated information, then do so.
2. Assure the school that you’re working to improve your weaknesses. For example, do you have a low GPA due to a poor mark in statistics? Enroll in a college-level stats class and let your target school know about it.
3. Inform the school of recent positive developments. If you’ve received a promotion at work, published an article, or amped up your community service commitments, then tell your target school.
4. Be considerate of the adcom’s time. The above information should be included in a succinct, respectful letter. If the letter is too long, they may just briefly skim it or just assume its applicant spam. If you want the adcom’s full attention, then you’ll have to earn it by writing a letter that they’ll want to read.
5. Do not harass the adcom. I hope this needs no explanation.
