Late last week, the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania announced a new partnership with Sovereign Bank, part of Banco Santander, to support education and research around globalization.
As part of this new Partnership for Globalization, the Wharton School and the Lauder Institute will launch two new initiatives, one focused on the economical, technological, political and social aspects of globalization and another on the teaching of business languages. The partnership will be channeled through Santander Universities, a global division at Banco Santander devoted to higher education.
“This collaboration will bring together a global network of scholars and will further the Wharton School’s commitment to expanding and sharing knowledge about today’s evolving global economy,” Wharton School Dean Thomas Robertson said in a statement announcing the partnership.
As part of the collaboration, the Lauder Institute, a joint venture between Wharton and the School of Arts and Sciences, will launch the TrendLab on Globalization. A three-year project, the TrendLab will analyze global trends on an annual basis and develop tools and methods for addressing them. There will be a five-day conference each year associated with the TrendLab’s work, which is expected to draw experts from the University of Pennsylvania and the Santander Group’s network of universities, among others. A scholar-in-residence with expertise on each conference’s theme will spend up to two semesters at Wharton.
As part of the new partnership with Sovereign Bank and Santander, the Lauder Institute also will design and implement a week-long workshop for teachers of foreign languages. The workshop will consist of a range of seminars to help language teachers from the Santander network and universities throughout the United States learn about basic business subjects and come up with ways to incorporate them into the language curriculum. The goal of this initiative is to help ensure that students of foreign languages learn not only how to communicate effectively but also how to develop culturally appropriate negotiation and management skills.
