Later this week, the Yale School of Management (SOM) will host its fifth annual Education Leadership Conference, drawing more than 600 top educators and leaders in education reform.
The theme for this year’s conference, which will take place on Friday, March 25th, is “From Policy to Practice.” Hosted by the Yale SOM Education Club, the event will feature an address by Delaware Governor Jack Markell as part of its opening night reception. Markell led Delaware’s efforts to win $100 million in Race to the Top funding.
On Friday, another legislator with strong ties to education, Colorado State Senator Mike Johnston, will deliver the morning keynote address. Johnston served as a top education advisor to President Obama, co-founded a national nonprofit called New Leaders for New Schools that recruits and trains urban principals, and is himself a Teach for America alumnus and former high school teacher and principal.
A lunchtime keynote panel will focus on the national implications of education reform efforts in New Haven, including a ground-breaking contract with the local teachers’ union and the launch of the New Haven Promise scholarship program. Panelists include Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers; Andres Alonso, CEO of the Baltimore City Public Schools; and Reginald Mayo, superintendent of New Haven Public Schools. Alex Johnston, president of ConnCAN, will moderate the discussion.
How can the nation improve its pipeline for teacher talent? Should an alternative model for school oversight be considered to replace the traditional school board? Is there a way to bring healthy food and wellness programs into cash-strapped schools? These – as well as the hot topic of teacher contracts – will all be discussed as part of a day full of panels.
Later in the day, an interactive session titled “The Digital Classroom” will let participants try out newly emerging digital tools for themselves to explore the use of real-time data in the classroom. And finalists in the inaugural Yale School of Management Education Business Plan Competition will present their ideas for nonprofit and for-profit ventures to improve the K-12 education system, vying for $10,000 in prize money donated by Wireless Generation and NewSchools Venture Fund.
