Amid a proliferation of specialized master’s degree programs emerging in the field of management education, the University of Michigan(U-M) ’s Stephen M. Ross School of Business last month announced that it will add its own to the mix: a unique master’s degree program in entrepreneurship offered jointly between Ross and the U–M College of Engineering.
Applications are being accepted now for the first cohort in this new program, which will being in fall 2012. U-M embraced this new specialized field of study because it is one not available through conventional business or engineering programs. Most business schools focus on the skill set required in larger, more mature organizations, and most engineering programs don’t include market assessment and commercialization skills, the school asserts.
“Our new program brings these two cultures together in a novel synthesis that is greater than the sum of its parts,” Bill Lovejoy, a Ross professor and co-director of the new program, said in a statement.
The 36-credit hour, 12-month program has been designed to provide participants with fundamental entrepreneurial skills and hands-on experience to help them learn how to transform cutting-edge technologies into innovative startup ventures.
“Ultimately, we are looking for smart, energetic students willing to tackle high-risk, high-return ventures because they believe in the potential of their product and in their ability to achieve their goals,” Aileen Huang-Saad, assistant director of academic programs at the College of Engineering’s Center for Entrepreneurship and co-director of the new program, said in a statement.
This new specialized master’s degree program complements the University of Michigan’s growing focus on innovation and entrepreneurship. The school also boasts two startup accelerators, three entrepreneurship centers and multiple business plan competitions.
