Retail. Let’s talk about it.

In many MBA programs, there is little attention given to retail per se, and yet the act of purchasing products, marketing, and then selling them encapsulates what almost every business does. The products may vary, and certainly the customer does, but retail is crucial.

At Tuck, students have the opportunity to run the Tuck store–called TuckStuff–in their second year. Started in 1986 as a project in the Tuck entrepreneurial class, the store has grown in size every year. While it is officially owned by Tuck, the students run it as real-life small company entrepreneurs. They must manage their P&L, decide what to stock, how to manage the store, what promotions to run, and how to use traditional and electronic marketing. They call all the shots.

For the students who actually run TuckStuff, the experience is intense, at times all-consuming, but in the end one of the defining aspects of their MBA.

When you come up to visit Tuck, make sure to stop in the TuckStuff store (it’s located next to the cafeteria) and see what they have to offer. Ask them what the experience is like.

In our classes at Tuck we role play as many possible business scenarios as we can. TuckStuff is a way for dedicated second years to put those skills to the test.
