This past week kicked off our first round of Club Treks here at Tuck. It’s not only a great opportunity to learn even more about companies of interest, but also a valuable chance to visit offices. It turns out that the search for the right firm is not so different from the search for the right b-school. Many of the criteria might even be the same e.g. (location, prestige, culture, ‘fit’, etc.) Fit, at first, was a concept which confused me, and on which I placed little emphasis when evaluating schools. Perhaps as an engineer, I had trouble making a decision based on something so subjective. It was not until I started to visit schools that I valued and understood the importance of fit. For me, there were school visits that completely eliminated programs I had considered near the top of my list and visits that had ignited interest in schools that I had not been considering so strongly. Tuck had always been at the top of my list (honestly!), but ultimately it was my visit to Tuck that placed it in a league of its own as the program for me. And so it is in the job search. A visit to an office can really give you a sense of firm ‘fit’. Can I see myself working here? Does the office culture seem too formal? Not formal enough? Do the people look like they’re enjoying their work? Can I see myself working long hours with them? Even silly things like: Are there enough windows? Do I like the furniture? Are the good places to eat nearby? These are all factors, some more trivial than others, which can be assessed in a short visit. And as in my b-school search, there are firms that I am now seriously looking into which were previously not even on my radar.
