Tuck Just Keeps Getting Cooler

I swear, every few months, something comes up that I’m so impressed with. Something that makes me think, “Man, I’m glad we’re here instead of (insertotherschoolhere)”. This month, it’s the Tuck GIVES auction.

Tuck GIVES is just another awesome example of why Tuck rocks. Each year Tuck GIVES helps to subsidize students who accept a non-profit, service based internship. As a liberal softie, it just puts a big ol’ smile on my face to know that there are still MBAers who would “give up” their banking/consulting/etc. internship to do something like this.

The idea is that this works two ways – first, for Tuckies, it makes taking one of these internships financially feasible. Second, some non-profits who wouldn’t otherwise be able to get Tuckies for internships now have that access. Last week we met a couple of guys who had taken these internships last year – one worked with a program doing some work for inner-city schools, another consulted on farming in Africa. Both of them made me pretty jealous of what great experiences they had.

And what’s the Tuck GIVES auction? Well, it’s two parts. First, there’s the silent auction (which is going on just around the corner from my office) and then Thursday night there’s the live auction. Students and partners have been working overtime to get great donations from the Tuck community, alumni and local sponsors. There’s everything from home-made mittens, professional photographs, a week at a Vail condo, a iPod pre-loaded with 80s hits … there’s even a jeroboam of Veuve Clicquot (the big question: does anyone have the guts to out-bid Dean Danos on it??).

The whole thing wraps up with the Live Auction on Thursday night, which is one of the few events at Tuck that gives you an excuse to wear something fancy, so I’m expecting big things!

Once again, it’s a pretty cool week around here and once again, I’m glad to be a Tuck Partner!
