Tuck Club of New York

The setting was picture perfect – up on the 50th floor of one of the high rises in Midtown Manhattan – gorgeous view of the City in all directions; Chrysler building and MetLife building seemed like they were almost within an arm’s reach. The occasion was the summer gathering of the Tuck Club of New York. This club, which is the result of the initiative of a T’05, now brings Tuckies in NYC together a few times every year.

Yesterday’s meeting was the summer get-together. Attended by generations of Tuck alumni – over 140 attendees – from the Class of 1953 to the just-graduated Class of 2009, as well as quite a few T’10s (including yours truly) – the evening was an opportunity to meet with Tuck alumni who are in New York City and vicinity, and for Tuck alumni to catch up with friends they haven’t seen in a while. Reception was followed by a panel discussion about philanthropy as a career with the panel consisting of distinguished Tuck alumni who have been very successful in the world of for-profit businesses and non-profit organizations.

The panel discussion itself was excellent and I thought one of the panelists, a venerable Dartmouth and Tuck grad, was fantastic. His sense of humor, the presence he commanded on stage, the stories he had to tell, and the way he related to the audience – it was truly something. Both before the panel discussion and after, I was able to catch up with quite a few of my classmates who I hadn’t seen in a couple of months. Later that evening, a few of us met for dinner and chatted at length. It was a great way to spend the evening.

Initially, I was not even sure if I would be able squeeze out enough time to go to the event. Things have been pretty hectic on the internship front. I’ve been spending long hours on the restructuring that I am doing for the managing partner and CEO of the firm where I work. But then, this would be one of the few opportunities I will have during the remainder of my internship to meet with friends before I take off for FSIB later this month (more on that in a future blog) and then to HEC, Paris for the exchange program.

And so, I went. I am so glad I did!
