Welcome to another edition of Trivia Tuesday, our weekly look at the policies and practices that differentiate the leading business schools. This week we turn our attention to the Leadership Initiative at UNC Kenan-Flagler.
Designed in response to feedback from top employers, the Leadership Initiative, launched in 2005, aims to integrate the development of leadership skills into the Kenan-Flagler curriculum. This initiative aims to equip every Kenan-Flagler graduate with a solid grounding in leadership skills such as teamwork, communication, analytical problem solving, general management and strategic thinking. The Leadership Initiative teaches students a learning cycle for leadership development, providing opportunities for MBA students to study skills, put them into practice, gain feedback on their progress and reflect on that feedback. As part of the Leadership Initiative, Kenan-Flagler students can enroll in a Leading and Managing course, and participate in Leadership Day, an annual event that features lecture series and leadership activities.
Interested MBA students have the option of participating in Leadership Immersion, a 4.5-credit course that offers students the chance to develop their leadership skills through experiential programs and extensive feedback. Over the duration of the eight-week course, students participate in simulations and competitions, embark on treks to visit executives, complete outdoor challenges and receive one-on-one coaching. Students may also participate in Student Teams Achieving Results (STAR), a leadership initiative program that gives top MBA students the opportunity to work directly with corporations and non-profit organizations in the U.S. and abroad. As part of the Leadership Initiative, the school also employs leadership coaches who provide students with feedback about their past leadership performance, both in their previous jobs and in the Leading and Managing course. In addition to helping students formulate a plan for improvement, leadership coaches also provide general career guidance and post-summer-internship feedback.
