Welcome to another edition of Trivia Tuesday, our weekly look at the policies and practices that differentiate the leading business schools. This week we turn our attention to the pre-term and orientation programs at Tepper School of Business.
Tepper offers both pre-term and orientation programs. As part of its pre-term offerings, Tepper conducts an academic course called the Quantitative Skills and Review Program (QSRP). This math course is a mandatory admissions provision for some students who do not have significant quantitative experience, though Tepper invites the entire incoming class to attend to get to know their classmates and explore the campus before the official orientation begins. In the summer of 2008, Tepper added an additional pre-term program for the benefit of first-year students who are interested in entrepreneurship. During the Swartz Entrepreneurship Boot Camp, veteran entrepreneurs and faculty members from the school’s Donald H. Jones Center for Entrepreneurship present lectures on topics such as growing a business, conducting due diligence and pitching ideas to investors.
Following these pre-term programs, a two-week orientation introduces the entire class of incoming students to the campus, to the city of Pittsburgh and to each other. Tepper’s academic and administrative departments and its on-site research centers familiarize students with the academic and career services the school provides. Past events have included several ethics discussions, resume and cover letter clinics led by the Career Opportunities Center, and seminars on Tepper’s recruiting procedures. There is also ample time devoted to social activities, such as lunches, socials and team-building exercises.
Second-year students return to campus to join the new class for Tepper Community Day, during which students work in teams to beautify various areas of the city and engage with the Pittsburgh community. Orientation culminates in Tepper Team Day at a nearby state park, where first-year students participate in outdoor teambuilding activities. Tepper second-year students guide and support the first-year students throughout Team Day events.
