It’s Tuesday, and that means it’s time again for Trivia Tuesday, our weekly examination of the components that make each MBA program unique. Today we’re going to take a look at the certificate programs offered by the University of California, Berkeley’s Haas School of Business.
Haas offers five certificate programs for students seeking formal recognition of in-depth study in an area: Entrepreneurship, Global Management, Health Management, Technology and Real Estate. The certificates, with few exceptions, do not usually require a separate application, and are open to all students able to complete the designated course and project requirements. Several of the programs draw on the vibrant technology, biotechnology and entrepreneurial cultures in the Silicon Valley; most offer the opportunity for field experience through an internship, consulting assignment, or other collaboration with companies in the Bay Area.
The Certificate in Global Management is designed to expose students to the theory and practice of global business management. To be eligible for this certificate, students must submit a brief application, complete at least eight credits of coursework with international content, participate in an “overseas experience,” and fulfill the program’s language requirement. Overseas experience can be formally obtained in a number of ways, including study abroad, participation in the International Business Development course, or significant prior professional experience outside one’s home country. To fulfill the language requirement, meanwhile, students are expected to demonstrate proficiency at a level equivalent to four semesters of college language study at UC Berkeley. This means that students hoping to earn a global management certificate should already have some proficiency in their target languages before beginning the MBA, as it is very difficult to complete four full semesters of language courses during the MBA program. Alternatively, students may demonstrate proficiency through a language exam, degree studies in a language other than English, or a college transcript showing equivalent university-level language study.
The Certificate in Management of Technology (MOT), which brings together students from the Haas School, the College of Engineering and the School of Information, is the largest interdisciplinary program at UC Berkeley. The program, which defines management of technology as “the set of activities associated with bringing high-technology products to the marketplace,” is designed to complement the training of students with both technical and non-technical backgrounds. MOT is supported by a number of foreign and domestic technology companies, which provide speakers, internships and other resources with the goal of building a positive recruiting relationship with MOT graduates.
