The Next Episode

As Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre so eloquently said, “Da-na-na-na-na. It’s the next episode.” Or something along those lines. The point is, my internship is coming to a close and I will soon return to the hallowed turf of Tuck circle for the next episode of The Great Tuck Adventure.

This episode has been a great time. At times, it’s been demanding (working until 4am and getting back up at 6am to keep going) but I’ve been given more responsibility than I was expecting as an intern and have had the opportunity to do and learn a lot over the course of the past three months. I’m much more confident about what I can bring to a PE firm after school having completed the internship. So, check plus for the summer!

At the time of writing this post, I was fully aware that while landing a PE job for the summer was a terrific coup, I would return to campus at the start of second year with a second mountain to climb (finding a full-time job for next year), while many of my classmates who had gone into consulting, banking, general management and marketing roles would come back with offers from their summer positions. Well, the chooks have come home to roost. So, part one of the next episode will be hustling and networking my tail off. It’s somewhat daunting but also invigorating to draw up my hitlist of target firms where I’d love to work, figure out what connections I have, and plan my assault on the job market. I’m 100% committed to finding a role as a consumer-sector PE investor – it’s a tough target to hit, but on the plus side, I’m hoping the clarity of my goal will make it easier to focus on and stick to.

There are three other key parts to the next episode: i) reorientation (official and unofficial), ii) reentry to academia, and iii) assumption of club leadership responsibilities.

i) I cannot wait for. Most of all over the summer, I’ve missed my good friends in Hanover. I’m going to a classmate’s wedding this weekend (and, sadly, missing another’s on the same day) and then, after finishing my internship the next week, will be heading straight back up to Hanover for what I fully expect to be a brilliantly fun week of catching up with all my good friends and hearing about their varied and interesting experiences over the summer and seeing their new off-campus pads, all to the sizzle of the barbeque. Bring it on!

ii) I’m also looking forward to. I’m overloading on fall electives, with PE Finance, Negotiations, Investments (with Ken French), Entrepreneurship and Innovation Strategy, Selling and Sales Leadership, and Strategic Brand Management. It’s going to be busy!! I’m also planning to do a Tuck Global Consultancy project in December, hopefully in consumer branded goods. I’m particularly excited about that – the opportunity to travel to a new part of the world, get involved in a formal consulting project (probably for the only time in my life), and get deeper experience of a consumer company from an operational, strategic, and/or marketing perspective. More on that later, no doubt.

iii) Together with co-captains and co-chairs, I’ll be leading the rugby and private equity clubs on campus this year. We’re hoping to carry on the marvellous stewardship of both clubs from last year and, where we can, take things to the next level. I’m very excited about getting the T’13s involved in both and getting to know what I’m sure will be an excellent group of people.

So, lots to look forward to and lots to get excited about. Perhaps my recent experience of two hours’ sleep per night will stand me in good stead for what lies ahead this fall! And they said first year fall is supposed to be busy.
