Summer plans

I’m one amongst more than 50 T’10s that find ourselves in New York City for the summer – there’s a bunch of us doing investment banking, some doing trading, a few others consulting, and yet others working in private equity and venture capital. I fall into this last group and my work includes working with the firm’s partners on a couple of deals they are putting together in addition to working with a portfolio firm to restructure their business. Pretty heavy stuff for an eleven-week internship right? But I’m actually finding it amazingly interesting. Of course, there’s all the financial modeling that goes without saying, but what I am truly excited about is the restructuring part – the opportunity to work one-on-one with the CEO and make a real difference for the firm during my brief involvement over the summer – I find that incredibly rewarding. I just completed a week on the job and it’s been a great learning experience already. I’m certainly looking forward to the remainder of my time here.

One of the added benefits of the internship (as it is for all my fellow classmates who are in the area for the summer) is the opportunity to live in and explore Manhattan. Although I have visited the City a number of times before, I have never actually lived here for any length of time, so I plan to take the time to explore the place as much as I can in the next couple of months. Of course, with so many of my classmates in the area, there will surely be opportunities for us to meet and catch up as a group whenever feasible. In fact, I was walking out of Grand Central a couple of days back and ran into one of my classmates who was going back to his apartment and we ended up chatting briefly – it was great to see a familiar face out of the blue! Last week, there was a get together of T’10s and T’11s in midtown Manhattan which I ended up missing because of a prior engagement. I am sure more such events will be happening during the rest of the summer. With so much going on, it’s going to be a lot of fun!
