Straight Up Fun.

It’s the tail-end of Orientation Week for the newest class of Tuck students. A week of getting the getting ready for the intense fall term, introducing them to heavy hitting professors and incredible alum (ie: EVP of ESPN International). A week of scheduled events from early in the morning (coffee + donuts) to late into the evening (some social, some work). A week of meeting peers and new friends that will rule the landscape of social interaction for the next two years.

And for folks like me this was a week of straight-up fun times.

While the students were busy in Career Vision workshops and attending faculty panels, a second year Tuck partner provided a schedule studded with a huge variety of fun activities. Combine this schedule with meeting up with the students upon their release each day, well it’s no wonder I haven’t been able to finish unpacking.

Canoeing with Hudson down the Connecticut River.
bonus: students rent the boats for free!

Hiking through “Vermont’s Grand Canyon” aka the Quechee Gorge.
I kept wanting to tell everyone it was Gorge-ous.

My contribution to the Gourmet Club potluck with 25+ partners.
Recipe here.

It has become a constant competition when both of us return home each evening. My student and I compete for who has had the cooler day, the most eventful, who met the most interesting person. This week we have updated each other as we rush off to an evening event (alum meet-ups, pub golf, etc.), in the grocery checkout line, and even while trying to organize our storage unit.

Meeting up for a breakfast+hike @ The Farmers Diner.
In a town called Quechee, VT.
Quechee. That’s what you get when you live here. Cool names like Quechee.
p.s. rhymes with squeegee…sort of.

I anticipated an enjoyable experience here, I really did, but Orientation Week has somehow exceeded any expectation. Sure, I had anticipated to have a connection with other partners going through this experience; those of us on the sidelines, relegated to “support staff” status. What I had not anticipated, however, was so much time spent with the students and let me just tell you, it’s been delightful. Classes start up tomorrow morning (first day of school!) and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we can maintain this crazy pace.

I’ll keep you updated.
