Shaping one’s Tuck experience – Part II

Please read Part I below before reading this post.

Another example: Last spring, one of the T’08s felt there wasn’t enough time during class sessions to discuss the current happenings in economics, politics, and the global business environment. The curriculum had to be covered in the specified class timeframe which didn’t leave too much opportunity to have an open discussion about current affairs.

This student then took the initiative, approached the school administration, talked to them about giving students a platform that takes their learning beyond the classroom, and pretty much took the lead in putting together a program that provides an opportunity for students to interact with experts on a given topic in a town hall setting. Since then, the program has transitioned to a team of T’09s and now to a team of T’10s who are intent on making this program, an integral part of the Tuck experience.

The result of that initiative is the News Hour program which brings together students, faculty, staff, alumni, and guest speakers at least twice every quarter and enables everyone to engage in an intellectual exchange about any number of topics. Examples of News Hour discussions over the last year include Presidential elections, credit crisis and bailout, global business outlook, Super Bowl ads analysis… basically, an eclectic set of topics that students are interested in learning more about. There are plans to have a couple of more sessions before the spring quarter ends to give students and some of the thought leaders among Tuck faculty, the opportunity to discuss the latest developments in specific areas of interest.

Yet another example is Tuck Moto Society. A couple of T’10s (one of them is my Fall study group mate) who are automobile and motorbike experts, came together to form this club to address their passion. In early winter, they had put together a presentation on winter driving tips which was very much appreciated by Tuckies and Tuck Partners who moved to Hanover from warmer climates. This week, in fact, is bike week and my classmates in the club are offering motorcycle rides to interested Tuckies. In mid-May, the club is bringing to Tuck, the senior global automotive lead partner at PriceWaterhouseCoopers to give an update on the global automotive industry. And this club has been in existence for less than six months!

It’s all about how passionate and how enthusiastic you are, and how much you want to contribute to yourself and to your fellow students while you are at Tuck. You can literally shape your own experience and that of your classmates while giving back to Tuck in so many different ways.

In terms of what you want to do at Tuck, sky is indeed the limit!
