I had to take continuing education for my Series 7, a securities industry license, this rainy dreary morning. This is because every Series 7 holder needs to take continuing ed every two years to renew their license. The official term is “Registered Representative” or whatever that means. Basically, I can sell securities or to dumb it down even further, sell and quote stuff. Anyway, wow, I can’t believe it has been more than two years already. Time sure does fly by fast. I spent the last three and a half hours this morning – exam style – refamiliarizing myself with securities laws and regulation. Throughout the “training,” there were questions that had to be answered correctly if I want to progress. There were even videos illustrating different scenarios – sort of like case studys. And I have to say that there was some baaaad acting in the videos…haha. Compared to the GMAT, this was a piece of cake. Any rational person with a bit of focus can pass. The only trouble I had was that there were no breaks. So three hours into it, I was getting a bit hungry and tired. If you couldn’t tell by now, I’m an eater. If I don’t get food into my system every few hours, I start to get dizzy and grumpy : (. Anyway, I successfully completed the course and now my license is good for another two years. Yay!
This actually brings up another thing that has been on my mind. SEC rules state that if you haven’t worked for a registered firm or been out of the securities business for two years or more and decide to return, you have to retake the Series 7 exam. And since bschool (knock on wood) is exactly two years, does this mean I have to retake it when I rejoin the workforce? The Series 7 is not hard, but it does require a lot of studying and I don’t really want to have to retake a 6.5hour exam. That’s something I have to look into.
