When the phone rang the other day, I found the mildly panicked friend of a friend on the other end of the line. Her son, she explained, had gained and accepted admission to his first choice college. This particular morning, however, he had told his mother of his impeding C- grade in AP physics. What would happen, she wanted to know, would his offer of admission be rescinded?
It’s not likely, I reassured her. During my time as an admissions officer, it took more than one C to set off alarm bells. At most, this student would likely receive an unpleasant warning letter from the Dean, a stern reminder of a senior slide that slid a little to far.
As the members of the class of 2011 prepare to walk across the stage and receive their diplomas, it’s easy to forget the lasting implications of the end of year celebrations. A few assignments or exams ignored, or a senior prank pulled can have lasting repercussions. As you move into the adult world, make your choices carefully, ensuring that you do receive the high school diploma you have worked so hard for and that your place on the college campus of your choice remains.
