It has been two weeks since I made my case for a promotion. So I went into the boss man’s office yesterday for a follow-up. I simply asked him if he had heard anything back. He said that he did ask and did get a reply. The answer that he received was that our company usually don’t consider promotions until appraisal/evaluation time, which is generally in October. And it would set a bad precedent if we suddenly change the timing. In other words, we have to go by the book and follow procedure. But he did say that he is open to and is supportive of my request because I “work hard, does a good job, and deserve it.” Basically, the inquiry has been put out there. It’s not the exactly the answer I wanted to hear. The admissions committee would have rendered a decision by October. I could have argued – backed up by a number of reasons why they should make an exception. The head trader even says the desk will fall apart without me. He still gets a little nervous anytime I take off work. But I’m sure me arguing wouldn’t have mattered. Truth be told, I am a little frustrated. I mean it’s bad enough that our bonus this year sucked (we actually made money!), but give me something at least right? Everybody needs some sort of motivation. But at least I tried – that’s the only thing I can do. So it looks like I’ll be submitting my application without that fancy new title. It’s cool though – it’s just more fuel for the fire.
Aside from that, I also did find out that my supervisor a.k.a. recommender #1 will be taking his two-week vacation starting August 10. Obviously I want him to submit the recommendation before he goes on vacation, so I will try to push for that as well. Let’s hope the application becomes available next week.
