(Sorry to my T’11 cohorts for not getting this up sooner…as you can tell, I am still plagued by my lack of planning…and T’12’s already get a glimpse of how responsive Tuck alumni can be…answering requests before you even know you need it!!!!)
It seems like so long ago I preparing to head to Hanover for orientation. What’s ironic is that are still things I needed to accomplish prior to orientation I have still have not accomplished. Blame it on Fall term, blame it on lazy…its still not done. So in the spirit of wishing an dreaming things were different, here is my list of top 10 things I wish I would have done BEFORE orientation.
1. Spent just a bit of time learning accounting. All of the accounting homework fell out of my closet the other day, it the stack was immense. That made me realize, just how hard I had to work because I came in knowing so little. In hindsight, just s few hours a week or even a community college audit cousre could have made a difference.
2. Recognizing that my GMAT score meant absolutlely nothing once I got admitted…we all got about the same score! What was useful was the discipline I learned prepping for the GMAT. I wish I had keptthat up somehow…
3. Creating a plan for what I wanted my life to look like outside of Tuck. Like planning my morning runs or when I was going to shop and cook my meals. In the midst of it all, because there was no plan, these were the first items to go when I got busy.
4. I would plan at least 2 vacations and pay for them. Somehow travel never sounded as good a sleep when we were on break so I feel just a bit like I’ve lost tocuh with the outside world.
5. Find a mechanic, carwash, dry cleaner and tailor. I my car has scars and there are new clothes I’ve neglected to wear because I didn’t handle this…
6. Follow the list in the binder compiled by tuck partners including chabging over my license to New Hanpshire license. I’ve been stopped twice already and I am tired of driving scared.
7. Make a list of who you want to meet: 2nd years, alumni, visitors (even if you only know characterstics) and companies you want to talk with. The number of opprotunities is fierce and thought before you have options is good. It can be grounding…
8. In a similar vein really thinking through how I wanted to interact with the 2nd years. I feel like I never saw them in the fall and by the time I started to know them, they are getting ready to leave! MISTAKE! I’d give anything for one more term with them
9. Plan trips in the Northeast if you’re not from here…one year down and all I can say is I’ve been to Boston and NYC. I’m not sure how I’m going to fit it all in next year!
10. Wrapping my head around the fact that coming was my choice…good, bad, ugly…I decided to be here and it will ony be what I make it…
