In my last post I was en route to Latin America for stops in Lima, Santiago, and Buenos Aires. Now, I have never been to Brazil to make a direct comparison, but I might have had the best steak of my life in Buenos Aires. It is always a pleasure in my travels when I have time to enjoy a meal with friends instead of eating Pringles from the mini bar in the hotel. Any of you out there who travel, know what I mean!
In Santiago, I was joined at the MBA fair by Carlos Barrios, T’03 and Julian Herman, T’06. They joined me on the same evening that Chile was playing in the World Cup. Now that is alumni dedication!
My travels have been wonderful so far this year. In addition to Latin America, I also had the chance to host Forte Forum events (www.forteforum.org) in San Francisco and Los Angeles and meet with alumni in each city. I will be in the office for the next several weeks, but then I will head out to stops in Europe and Asia before my travel season comes to an end.
A trip for Tuck is never complete unless I see someone in passing from Tuck that I did not expect to see. I am not referring to someone who happened to show up at a reception unannounced or looked me up specifically because they know I would be in town. I am talking about a random sighting of someone connected to the Tuck community. Leslie Robinson completed my last trip. Leslie is an Assistant professor of Business Administration at Tuck who, among many other things, teaches a core accounting course at Tuck. I ran into Leslie as I was literally running to catch the last bus from South Station in Boston up to Hanover. Leslie was just starting her trip at the time. Two years ago, I was in Madrid and saw Syd Finkelstein. Syd is a faculty member at Tuck who, again, among MANY other things, teaches Analysis for General Managers in the core and Top Management Teams in the elective curriculum. Syd happened to be in Madrid for a book tour. I passed him on the street…what are the chances??
Once you are part of this community, the chances of seeing someone from Tuck out and about in the world are actually quite good. I think this says two things; people at Tuck like to travel and more importantly, you really get to know people when you are here. You don’t just recognize a face in the crowd in the airport, but someone you have come to know through meaningful interaction in the community.
Looking forward to seeing you out and about!
