Penn Offers Popular Open Enrollment Summer Term

According to a recent Daily Pennsylvanian article, Penn’s 12-week summer courses have proven extremely popular, and not just among Penn students. Following in the footsteps of other top universities like Cornell, the University of Chicago, and Harvard Extension, Penn has opened up their summer session to any student who wishes to attend. There are no admissions essays and no interviews; students need simply to sign up.

Other drawing points to the Penn’s summer term include the wide selection of evening courses and the addition of more online-only courses. Last summer there were only three online courses; this year there are nine.

The trend to attend summer school is not just popular at the Ivies. In fact, enrollment at public universities is at an all-time high: Students from more expensive private schools, and even Ivies, often choose to spend their summers studying at public universities to save money.

Another Ivy League/public university distinction: The Ivy League schools don’t see nearly as many high school students (who are looking to accumulate college credit) during the summer term as the public universities see, though some Ivies still experienced increases in this area. Columbia’s pre-college program increased by almost 7%; Brown’s high school summer attendance increased by 20%. Penn, on the other hand, experienced a slight decrease in the number of high schoolers on its campus this summer.
