Today is my last first day of school. Assuming I don't venture back for more graduate school later in life, this is it. So far, being a second year really is the life. I know what I'm doing, I know what to expect, and I know my peers. On top of that, I had the pleasure of working a summer internship at a company that gives offers (or doesn't) on the last day on the job, so with a job offer in hand, I'm going to kick back and enjoy it while I can.
I am only taking three classes during Mod I. That's in part due to laziness and wanting to slowly ramp-up into the hectic lifestyle, but also because I've signed up for a class that is renowned for being torturous – Corporate Valuation. My fellow marketers and I take this together in our second year, where the financial wizards are noticeably absent. It's kind of like the short bus version of the class. We're smart people, but financial analysis isn't our strong skill set, nor do we enjoy it. However, it's one of those classes that nearly all Owen alumni in marketing encouraged us to take. So here we are on day one of class talking about free cash flows, discount rates and all kinds of finance jargon that we learned during Mod I last year and forgot. I'm also taking New Products, which so far promises to be interesting and relevant. It's taught by the new marketing prof, who happens to be incredibly energetic, loud and entertaining, all of which will keep my attention. Additionally I'm enrolled in Managing & Improving Processes, which is supposed to be one of the classes to take while you're at Owen. Professor Hyer also apparently has some fascination with chickens? An alumnus told me this, and either he's right or he's just trying to embarrass me. I will know more about that tomorrow.
Overall the buzz at Owen today was infectious. The moment was a little bittersweet and emotionally confusing. “Only one more year left” can be said with a smile and with a frown, depending on my mood. Either way, the countdown has begun: only 270 days left until graduation …
