Obama to Nominate Haas Professor to Council of Economic Advisers

The Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley got another feather in its cap today when President Obama announced plans to nominate a professor to his Council of Economic Advisers. In a White House statement, Obama said he planned to nominate Carl Shapiro, a professor of business and economics, to the panel.

“Carl Shapiro has demonstrated knowledge and dedication throughout his career,” Obama said in the statement. “I am grateful that he has chosen to take on this important role, and I look forward to working with him in the months and years to come.”

Once confirmed, Shapiro will replace Cecilia Rouse, who is is leaving the council to return to Princeton University. He’s not the first faculty member at Haas (Haas Full-Time MBA Profile) so honored. Haas professor and former dean Laura Tyson served on the council from 1993 to 1995, and Haas economics professor emerita Janet Yellen served from 1997 to 1999. Berkeley economics professor Christina Romer served as chairperson from 2009 to 2010.

Shapiro joined the Berkeley faculty in 1990 and is currently on leave, working as the deputy assistant attorney general for economics in the economic analysis group of the U.S. Department of Justice’s antitrust division, where he supervises 50 economists.
