This entry will recap my visit to NYU yesterday. Since the campus is so close to where I live, I figure I walk over in flip flops. It took me about 15 minutes and I was there by 12:30. I had about half an hour to kill before my class visit, and a NYU 2nd year student ambassador was nice enough to chat with me in the admissions office. She was for sure really enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the school. I threw all sorts of random questions at her and she was happy to answer them. So far so good.
After about half an hour later, the other prospective applicants/visitors started streaming in. There were quite a few internationals including a guy from Nigeria, a few girls from Brazil, and one from Israel. Most were dressed up business casual. I was the only one in flip flops – I hope they didn’t take it as though I was trying to stand out and make a statement or something like that Facebook guy. I’m just more comfortable in flip flops. Anyway, the admissions coordinator began matching up visitors with current students to take us to our classes. After thanking the student ambassador for her time, my host took me to his microfinance class, which was from 1:15 to 2:50. He introduced me to the professor and she welcomed me and this other visitor to the class. But the class lecture itself was kind of boring and dry. We went over legal and credit documents to establish a loan. I think there were some JD/law students in the class as well. I have to admit – legal jargon is not my forte. Reviewing word by word the clauses and details of such documents can be painstakingly slow. I’ll leave such work to more capable and better people than myself.
When the class ended, I headed down to the student lounge for the coffee break and student chat. I think this was my favorite part of the day. I talked with a current 1st year student who was from Germany and also an admissions rep. It doesn’t hurt to make myself known to admissions and score some brownie points. I made it clear to her that I will be applying to Round 1. One other thing, big shout out to Jovan, who is a current 1st year student at NYU and who is also one of my readers. I met him briefly during the coffee break. I’ll definitely keep in touch brotha!
After the coffee break, the other visitors and I went on the information tour, which lasted way longer than I thought – about two hours! Three 2nd year students took us around the building. We did a lot of walking up and down the stairs as well as a lot of standing. So much so that my lower back was starting to get uncomfortable and tight – an unfortunate downside to all the physical things I’ve been doing. As for the things covered in the tour, there was nothing new that I didn’t know. I did find out that unlike other schools’ essay word limits, NYU is pretty strict. So don’t go over! 750 max means just that!
Because the tour lasted longer than expected, I could not meet up with Jovan or a guy from gmatclub.com. But I’ll probably get in contact with them via email or something. My final thoughts? I could see definitely see myself at NYU. Everyone was genuinely nice and as helpful as they can. Anyway, time to start cracking and finalizing the essays. So I’ll probably be busy for the next few weeks and would not be updating the blog as much.
