New York University’s Stern School of Business has named renowned international economist Peter Blair Henry to serve as the school’s next dean. Henry, who will assume the deanship effective January 15, 2010, replaces Dean Tom Cooley, who has served as Stern’s dean since 2002.
Henry, the Konosuke Matsushita Professor of Economics at Stanford University and a Rhodes Scholar, led the Obama transition team’s review of the International Monetary Fund, World Bank and other international lending agencies and has served as an economic advisor to governments from the Caribbean to Africa. His area of expertise focuses on the impact of economic reform on emerging economies
“Seldom – if ever – have I seen greater certainty or more enthusiasm for a candidate for a deanship,” NYU President John Sexton said in a statement announcing his appointment. Sexton went on to describe Henry as “a superb and highly productive economics scholar, a natural leader, a community-builder and a manifestly good person” who “thinks long-range and strategically.”
Henry was first appointed an assistant professor at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business in 1997, where he would go on to be named the Konosuke Matsushita Professor of International Economics and the John and Cynthia Fry Gunn Faculty Scholar and to serve as the associate director of the Center for Global Business and the Economy. He is also a senior fellow of the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research and the Stanford Center for International Development, a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research, a nonresident senior fellow of the Brookings Institution and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
Henry has published numerous articles and book chapters on the topics of debt relief, international capital flows and the role of institutions in economic growth and is currentl writing a book for Oxford University Press. He holds a B.A. in economics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a B.A. in mathematics from Oxford University and a Ph.D. in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
