For many people, the January 23 writing date will be their second time writing the SATs. Perhaps they panicked and know they can do better; or perhaps they didn’t score well and need to do better – everyone has their own reasons. Rewriting a test can be disheartening, especially if you fall into the second category of rewritten. However, with 1 month until test date, there is no time for self pity. Take these steps to keep yourself focused and confident until you write.
- Let go of the guilt! Leave the past in the past because you can’t change it. The best thing to do now is stop beating yourself up for any mistakes you made. Take a deep breath, tell yourself (yes out loud) that you will do better this time.
- Remember you’ll be writing a different test. While it still is the same exam format, you’ll be seeing different math problems, different essay prompts, and different reading passages. There is always a chance the exam could be easier (for you) this time around simply because it’s a new exam.
- Learn from your study mistakes. With one month until test date, take some time to think about your last study plan. What worked for you? What didn’t?
- Take advantage of your experience. Once you’ve revamped your study plan, think about the exam itself; what do you think cause you to perform poorly? Couldn’t handle the stress? While it’s true that no one wants to write an exam any more than they have to, there’s some serious advantages that come with writing an exam a second time. So keep your spirits up, and remember, you’re already going in more prepared than you were last time. By the way, you’ve got until December 23, 2009 to [info:'sat-registration' register for next month's writing], so if you’ve been debating a rewrite, act quickly to get registered in time.
