London’s College of Law will allow some students to obtain a J.D. and take the New York Bar through an initiative with Northwestern University Law School, legalweek.com reports.
Beginning in September, those students in the full-time Graduate Diploma in Law program who continue to complete either the Bar Professional Training Course or the Legal Practice Course can take the New York Bar Exam after an extra 22-week study program. Students can take this program, which includes electives in US business and securities law, in England or potentially at Northwestern in Chicago, pending negotiation.
Upon successful completion, graduates, either from the US or the UK, will be awarded a J.D., and an opportunity to sit for the New York Bar. They can also, with their LL.B degree, continue their training in the UK to become a solicitor or barrister. Thus, this new initiative opens up legal career opportunities on both sides of the Atlantic.
