New 21st Century Doctor Training

Medical schools, departments of public health, and nursing schools are facing new challenges in the 21st century that require curriculum updates and changes, reports a Medical News Today article. To better deal with “severe institutional shortages,” increasing costs, changing demographics, and the fact that “a large proportion of the 7 billion people who inhabit our planet are trapped in health conditions of a century ago,” a new report calls for major reform in the training of rising healthcare professionals.

The authors of the report explain, “The problems are systemic: mismatch of competencies to patient and population needs; poor teamwork; persistent gender stratification of professional status; narrow technical focus without broader contextual understanding; episodic encounters rather than continuous care; predominant hospital orientation at the expense of primary care; quantitative and qualitative imbalances in the professional labour market; and weak leadership to improve health-system performance.”

Among the reforms suggested by the authors is that programs should generate and maintain a “diverse student body with a competency-based curriculum” that utilizes information technology, emphasizes teamwork, and that highlights various career paths “that are based on the spirit and duty of a new professionalism.”

A call for strengthened leadership among educators, investors, and students is also emphasized in the report.
