The New York Times reports a somewhat delayed but still strong resurgence of interest in graduate schools due to the recession and unstable job market. While the LSAT saw a record number of test takers this year, up 20 percent from last year, the GRE also had a rise in test takers, up 13 percent.
Law schools, as well, noticed sharp increases in applications: The University of Iowa’s College of Law had a rise of 39 percent in applicants, while the University of San Francisco School of Law had a rise of 35 percent, and Washington University in St. Louis School of Law a rise of 19 percent. Cornell University Law School and Maurer School of Law at Indiana University both saw even more significant increases, with the former’s applications up 44 percent and the latter’s up 54 percent.
Many experts anticipated this renewal of interest in graduate programs, but didn’t expect such a delayed response to the crumbling job market.
