Moral Character Determination: How Long Does it Take?

I submitted my application to the State Bar of California in February, but due to some hiccups with documentation from the Texas DPS (the Lone Star state’s version of the DMV) my application was not considered complete or filed until April 2, 2010.  My moral character determination was made on September 23, 2013:

The Committee of Bar Examiners is pleased to advise you that you have been found to possess the good moral character required for certification to practice law in California.

I received this news in a letter dated September 24, 2010.

My advice to 3Ls?  File your moral character determination sooner rather than later.  Also, don’t change your address on your driver’s license while you’re in the middle of submitting your moral character paperwork!  Texas DPS took nearly two months to issue my new license.  During that time my DPS audit number changed but was not issued to me, which prevented me from successfully requesting my driver’s record (as required for the moral character application).

In any event, the moral character hurdle has been cleared!
