To be successful on the GMAT, you have to master timing. Most GMAT test takers can master the concepts tested on the GMAT, but answering each question in less than 2 minutes takes lots of practice and skill. With regard to the GMAT math section, one way to ensure that you stay on pace with each problem is to come to the test knowledgeable about some simple quant shortcuts. In the following video and examples to follow, we will examine a handy tip for dividing by 5 that will help to improve both your accuracy and pacing:
Example: What is 3.2/5?
First, take the dividend, 3.2, and double it: 3.2 * 2 = 6.4 Then take the result, 6.4, and move the decimal one place to the left: 6.4 becomes 0.64 As you can see, this shortcut can really save you time. Let’s try another example:
What is 435/5?
First, take the dividend and double it: 435 * 2 = 870 Next, take the result, 870, and move the decimal one place to the left: 870 becomes 87 Be sure to memorize this shortcut for dividing by 5 prior to your GMAT test day. And when you encounter other useful shortcuts during your prep, record them into flashcards that you review periodically.
