MBA News: Major Change in Grade Disclosure Policy at Columbia Business School

Columbia Business School students recently voted to implement a grade non-disclosure policy, which takes effect on August 1, 2011. A record 91% of MBAs and EMBAs participated, 77% of the student body voted to approve the non-disclosure of grades, GPAs, and transcripts to employers until a student accepts a full-time position with an employer. However, students are allowed to disclose receipt of academic honors like the Dean’s List and membership in honor societies. Individual students still have the legal right to determine whether or not to disclose their grades, but the new norm at CBS will be for students to keep their grades to themselves.

It is unclear what the effect of this change will be on corporate recruiting at Columbia, but the decision was overwhelmingly supported by students. The student body recently communicated the policy change to recruiters, indicating that they believe that “grade non-disclosure promotes greater risk-taking, teamwork, experiential learning, and community building in the classroom, resulting in more well-rounded graduates, better employees, and stronger leaders.” We hope the grade non-disclosure change has the positive impact they anticipate!
