MBA Conferences

Before Tuck I was unaware of the large number of MBA conferences across the country. For every industry area–media, finance, consulting, marketing, retail, etc.–there are usually several well run conferences hosted at business schools. And these are invaluable opportunities to hear from industry leaders, meet fellow students, and network.

At Tuck the student heads of most clubs put on an event during the year. I know the Chairs of the Media & Entertainment club have been working for months planning our own event, which will occur April 1-2, 2010. I will post more about this once the website is “live.”

But I want to highlight a conference in particular that I attended this past Friday: the MBA MEC (Media & Entertainment Conference) held down in New York City. This is a large event put on jointly by Columbia, NYU, Wharton, MIT, and Duke. The organizers did a great job this year, despite the blizzard that shut down most of the city. Highlights included talks from Philippe Dauman, CEO of Viacom, and Janet Robinson, CEO of The New York Times.

For prospective students, attending one of these conferences is a fantastic way to hear from business leaders in various industries, get a feel for the school that hosts the event, and meet students from a variety of schools.
