Classes got underway yesterday at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business with a new leader at the helm. Professor Phil Powell will now lead Kelley’s full-time MBA program, replacing Jim Wahlen, professor of accounting, who will return to his role in the accounting department.
Powell, a business economist, plans to focus his energies first and foremost on helping Kelley students find job opportunities – including in non-traditional industries – amid current uncertain economic times. “Our sole goal in the MBA program this year is to confront the job market,” he said in a statement.
Kelley students are helped in their job search by something called the “H-Factor” or “Hoosier Factor,” Powell says, which he uses to refer to the combination of a top-nothc education and a top-notch work ethic. Kelley’s collaborative work environment also helps make the school’s MBA experience unique, he adds.
“As one student put it to me, ‘Kelley is an elite school that doesn’t act elitist,’” Powell said in a statement. “Our students are known for getting hired and rolling up their sleeves, getting to work and working effectively in teams,” he continued.
Powell, who holds a doctorate in economics from Vanderbilt University, served previously as the faculty chairperson of the evening MBA program at Kelley’s Indianapolis campus.
