Christmas and New Year in the Bay Area with Joana’s family was a lot of fun. Wine tasting in Sonoma and Napa, golfing in December, hiking in Muir Woods, shopping in the city, time relaxing with family… lots to be said for it all.
Yet, when I found myself sitting in Feldberg library yesterday, watching flecks of snow twinkling through the air like fairy dust as wind carried it from the roof across the crisp, blue, sunny Hanover skies, my heart was delighted to be back at Dartmouth.
A 10-day respite was the first proper break I’ve had since getting here, and it provided ample opportunity for reflection. It made me appreciate anew the special life we live here at Tuck – surrounded by smart, fun people, many of whom have become close friends; engaging in intellectually stimulating subject matter day after day; working and playing in idyllic surroundings.
Sudden fear gripped me as I sat in Feldberg. We’re already about a quarter of the way through this journey. Tuckies were not lying when they told me to savor every moment, as time flies by. As excited as I am to begin my internship and post-Tuck career, I dread the thought of being apart from the wonderful people here in Hanover.
Alas, time has no master and I must but enjoy it while it lasts. Enjoying myself this term should not prove difficult: fascinating international macroeconomics with former White House economist Matt Slaughter; a masquerade formal ball on my birthday weekend; case-based strategy with a characterful visiting professor from Bocconi, Milan; frequent skiing trips to Killington; marketing 101 to introduce me to an area I am fascinated in and know little about; Tuck Rugby fitness training from New Hampshire’s strongest man 2010; independent study project to source UK acquisition targets for a New York growth equity PE firm; the triumphant return of the Burns supper (more on that later); the Intro to Entrepreneurship elective; and an MBA soccer tournament in Texas. No wonder time flies here in the woods, and no wonder I want to savor it!
