Woohoo! My Columbia essays are finally finished! After months of painstaking revision after revision after revision (you get the picture) to perfect them, I finally feel like they are ready to be submitted. I have to be honest, this is the first time that I’ve worked on a piece of writing for so long (I’ve been working on them since March!). The admissions consultant really helped. He was harsh, critical, and busted my balls on more than a few occasions. He really pushed me to the limit as far as what my goals and aspirations are. Specifically, he helped me lasered in on the message that I want to get across. And to be honest, both of us got a little frustrated every now and then throughout the process. But in the end, it was all worth it. It was definitely money well spent. And I have to say, I am more than satisfy with how they came out. Without giving any details away, I especially like the fact that although the three essays are each different and separate, they fit together perfectly to tell my story. Let’s just hope Columbia feels that that story is interesting and unique enough. Now all I’m waiting for is the application to be made available, so I can be the very first ones to fire away and submit.

An unintended consequence also resulted during the writing process. That is, I came to understand myself a little bit more. After months of digging deep, analyzing myself, how I got to where I am now, what my aspirations are, why business school, how is this going to affect my love ones, etc, I think I’ve gotten to understand my own psyche a little bit more. This may sound kind of silly. But it’s as though I’ve gone through a meaningful spiritual journey, MBA style! Life is kind of ironic that way: you set out to do one thing, and somehow something else wonderful happens. I know I’m being vague. But it is kind of personal and I don’t feel it’s appropriate for me to share it. Well, not just yet anyway : )
But I can say that this does NOT change my MBA plans at all. If anything, I am now more than ever determined to see this whole journey through to the end, no matter what the outcome.

I’m also sending the essays to my two recommenders along with my resume and any other information that I think would be helpful. Hopefully, those guys will give some good feedback. I’m also hoping that they can use these essays for ideas for the recommendation letter itself. They will definitely provide them with a better insight into who I am and why I’m applying to business school. I know these guys are pretty busy and any research material they can go on would be helpful. It’s also a kind of sly reminder to them that this is important to me and that applications are coming up soon. So they better get cracking!
