International Student Applications Up at American Graduate Schools

Here are some facts and figures about the recent increases in international student applications to U.S. grad schools from The Chronicle article “Foreign-Student Applications Rise 7% at American Graduate Schools“:

  • International applications at American grad schools are up 7% in 2010.
  • The increase follows a three-year lag in international students applying to grad schools in the U.S.
  • The increase represents the number of applications, NOT the number of students who actually enroll. Last year saw a 4% increase in applications, but there were no changes in enrollment. American graduate schools are optimistic, nevertheless.
  • The largest increase in applications is from China. Applications from India, on the other hand, dropped 2% and remained flat in South Korea. Both India and South Korea experienced huge drops in applications to America in 2008 (12% and 9% respectively).
  • Applications from the Middle East rose 18% in 2009.
  • The three most popular fields for international students are business, engineering, and the sciences (including physical and earth sciences, computer science, and math).
  • Graduate programs that already had the largest international student bodies are the programs that received the most international applications again this year.
