The Council of Graduate School issued a press release last week about the growing number of international graduate students who are applying to U.S. institutions.
Applications from China are up 18% (and that’s after a 20% increase last year), while applications from South Korea increased 2% (comparable to last year) and 7% from India (compared to 1% last year). Turkey and the Middle East showed application growth of 12% this year, compared to 20% last year.
In general, graduate institutions in the U.S. reported an increase in applications of 72% over last year.
More graduate application trends:
- Private, not-for-profit schools reported an 11% increase in international applicants, while public schools saw a 9% increase. Last year these numbers were 12% and 7%, respectively.
- All regions in the U.S. experienced an increase in applications from international students. The northwest region of the U.S. saw a 13% increase (the largest), while the South saw the smallest gain at 7%. The Midwest and Northeast had gains of 10% and 8%, respectively.
- Engineering and physical and earth sciences experienced a 12% increase in international applications.
- The field of education saw a 9% increase in international applications.
- Arts and humanities, as well as life sciences, increased 8%.
- Social sciences and psychology saw a 5% increase in foreign applicants, compared to 11% last year.
- The field of business experienced the smallest increase in international applications this year at only a 4% increase this year compared to 11% last year. 25 business schools reported a 4% decrease in international applications.
