Sorry for the break in service – my in-laws have been in town for the past couple of weeks, so what little free time exists in a busy first-year spring term has been entirely consumed. I’d forgotten just how bad Crystal Light tastes until I was reunited with trusty old Robinsons No Added Sugar. Ah, the wonderful taste of Great Britain!
It’s a funny old business having people visit Dartmouth, and always encourages me to look at things afresh. “Wow, this place is like a movie set! It’s not real!” Easy to forget, but nice to remember.
My wife’s step-dad sat in on a Structuring Mergers & Acquisitions class and was blown away by the richness of the Conrail case discussion and the professor’s ability to “lead [him] down the wrong path as though it was obviously right before exposing the folly of [his] logic.”
I’m really enjoying the mix of elective and core classes in spring term. Each Monday and Tuesday I have Operations Management, Management Communications (on which I will write a separate post soon), Database Marketing (how to make money with customer information), and Strategy in Turbulent Environments. The pace and content of each class is extremely different, yet I find that the Tuck core curriculum has set me up to understand the linkages between each subject and how they fit into the overall mindset through which successful business leaders understand the world.
The highlight of the recent social calendar was Frosty Jester, a stand-up comedy show organized by and featuring current Tuck students and partners. I consider myself somewhat of a stand-up aficionado and often lament the relative poverty of American stand-up compared to my homeland. (I don’t miss good stand-up quite as much as Robinsons, but it is close.) Frosty Jester proved a magnificent exception. It was smart, witty, edgy, and the best work out for my obliques in many weeks. Tuckies mocked themselves, each other, their classmates and their professors mercilessly, with very few holds barred. Bravo to all involved.
