Increase in Law School Tuition…and Applications

Not only are thousands of jobs in the legal sector cut each month, but law school tuition has also risen for the upcoming school year. Nevertheless, more and more people are applying to law school, with a 13.3 percent increase in LSAT test takers from the previous year, according to U.S. News & World Report.

The question is, what is the current value of a legal education? Applicants are forgoing scholarships to lower-ranked schools and choosing to pay full tuition to top-tier schools, when even a degree from a top school does not necessarily guarantee a job in this economy.

And despite this economy, tuition is still rising, to the point that “relatively small tuition increases are touted as big news.” Public law schools are bearing the brunt of the financial mess, as funding for higher education has been slashed in most states. At least some schools are attempting to make the $150,000 spent on tuition worth it, with a greater focus on practical education and employment opportunities.
