Impact of Law School Rankings

The law school rankings by the U.S. News & World Report greatly affect law school admissions and diversity, according to the Morse Code blog. These rankings influence applicant evaluation of quality and reputation in legal education. Naturally, law schools strive to boost their stats, and in turn, their rankings. Plus, the impact of the rankings goes beyond law school admissions and extends into the workplace and real world, as a tool when assessing status and ability.

Yet, how do the rankings affect law school diversity? U.S. News presents an annual law school diversity index as well, which is not incorporated into the larger law school rankings. This exclusion is maintained due to the difficulty of establishing a scale to measure diversity for each law school. U.S. News claims that although selectivity stats, such as undergrad GPAs and LSAT scores, account for 25% of a school’s overall rank, this does not impede diversity at law schools, since they use the median GPAs and LSAT scores rather than the averages, thus allowing schools to accept those with very low numbers without greatly influencing their rankings.
