Some of you want an MBA degree, but have a hard time explaining why you want it. I’ve put together some tips to help you better answer this important essay question:
- Identify role models with MBAs. Think about your current and former co-workers. Which ones have an MBA? Of those, who do you respect and why? Think about all the different dimensions such as leadership, teamwork, analytical, and marketing skills. Don’t forget to identify role models at different stages of their post-MBA careers. For example, talk to alums that have graduated 2, 5, 10, and 15 years ago.
- Schedule an informational interview with each role model. Tell them you’re impressed with their work, and you’d like to learn more about their success. During the informational interview, ask them to tell you a recent occasion where they used knowledge they learned from business school.
- Reflect and re-evaluate your “Why MBA?” answer. After each informational interview, re-evaluate why you want an MBA. If applicable, update your response with the new information you’ve heard.
- Test your 30 second elevator pitch. Toward the end of the informational interview, ask your contact if he or she would be willing to give you feedback on your “Why MBA?” pitch. They may have ideas and suggestions on how to make your response stronger.
