If you have a gap of few months or more, explain the reasons for it in your application.
In general, American programs are more sensitive to this issue. One of my clients with a significant gap was called for a second interview (with an admissions officer) at Columbia Business School to clarify the situation. She found a job by the time of the interview and was admitted into Columbia MBA.
