Hidden Treasure

I purchased my current laptop through Northwestern Law School’s laptop program. This was around the same time I leased my apartment in Chicago and tried (unsuccessfully) to psych myself up for my first, real winter. But, back to the point, when I purchased my laptop I threw an extra laptop battery into my shopping cart. Just in case.

Shortly thereafter, chaos ensued. I changed my plans and started law school at UT. The extra battery was tossed into a moving box and subsequently forgotten.

Next week, I’ll take the bar exam on the my laptop. But my laptop’s battery reserve lasts just 2-5 minutes after four long years of grad school. This isn’t much of a problem since I’m always plugged in.

I hadn’t consciously considered the unlikely, but real disaster that could result if my laptop became inadvertently unplugged during the bar exam… until about 4am this morning. I woke up in a sweat after a nightmare in which my computer lost power in the last few minutes of the essay exam and my answers were lost.

After a restless night of worrying whether I could quickly procure a new battery, the long lost extra battery was remembered and (miraculously!) retrieved. Thank you, past self, for buying that extra battery on a whim. The peace of mind was worth every penny.
